Take OntarioMD’s free updated Privacy & Security Training for the Healthcare Sector to boost your knowledge!
OntarioMD (OMD) recently launched its updated Privacy & Security Training for the Healthcare Sector. The online course now features a re-designed format for ease of use and enhanced content to include guidance and information on new digital health tools, including those enabled by artificial intelligence (AI). From scribes to clinical decision support, AI is impacting how clinicians manage information, streamline workflows and enhance patient care.
These advances come with an equally important responsibility to prioritize patient trust. Clinicians are legally responsible for the privacy and security of their patient’s information. This includes ensuring that technologies adhere to strong privacy and security practices. Hackers rely on human mistakes and with 1 in 3 clinicians facing cyber threats, privacy and security training is an important part of a clinician’s toolkit.

“Physicians continue to face pressure,” said Dr. Chandi Chandrasena, Chief Medical Officer of OMD. “Administrative burden remains a significant challenge across the health system, particularly in primary care, specialist care and community care. Clinicians want to explore technologies that can help, but they also need confidence that patient data and personal health information are protected and that privacy, regulatory, and liability risks are clearly addressed.” Leveraging OMD’s expertise in understanding the day-to-day work of physicians and other clinicians, the training provides relevant and practical information based on real-world scenarios.
OntarioMD’s Privacy & Security Training for the Healthcare Sector is a comprehensive online course on key privacy and cybersecurity concepts for clinicians working in community and acute care settings. It covers:
- privacy legislation, i.e., Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
- your obligations as a Health Information Custodian (HIC) of personal health information (PHI) under the Act
- the dos and don’ts for protecting PHI from security incidents and breaches
- legal and professional obligations related to the use of AI tools
- cybersecurity tips and scenarios informed by real-world clinician experiences
It is available in English and French and clinicians can earn 15.25 CME credits upon completion of the course.
“As clinicians, we’re navigating rapid changes in digital health, and with already busy workloads, it’s challenging to ensure we’re integrating new AI tools safely into our practices. OMD’s Privacy & Security courses take the guesswork out of that process – the new course is relevant, practical, and aligned with the realities of clinical practice today.”
Dr. Loredana Di Santo, Family Physician
The updated course provides much-needed guidance for clinicians increasingly interested in AI’s potential, but remain cautious about its implications for patient data and security.
In a recent survey by the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, 49% of respondents report that the most prominent concern about the adoption of AI scribes is medico-legal and privacy risk.
AI scribes are showing promise in helping address the administrative burden by generating clinical notes during patient visits. By reducing time spent on documentation, these tools can help physicians focus fully on patient care.
“AI has the potential to help free up valuable time for physicians,” said Ariane Siegel, General Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer of OMD, “but understanding the privacy, security and governance requirements for using these tools in clinical practice is essential.”
“I found the new AI content particularly valuable in understanding how PHIPA applies when using AI applications. The emphasis on reviewing outputs for accuracy and ensuring reasonable safeguards are in place gave me greater confidence in adopting these tools.”
Roger M., Clinic Executive
AI will continue to play an increasing role in health care. Ensuring that its use aligns with appropriate privacy and security practices is essential to protecting patients and supporting responsible innovation.
OMD also offers Virtual Care Privacy & Security training. This course covers what primary care clinicians need to know about privacy and security when delivering virtual care, including applicable legislation, consent requirements, and privacy policies in the context of virtual care. This course offers 2 CME credits.
