Over more than 20 years working in digital health, I’ve seen wave after wave of primary care innovation, from EMRs to AI-enabled solutions and now the prospect of transitioning to a new Primary Care Medical Record. While each advancement promises benefits, physicians are often asked to adapt to multiple changes at once.
The challenge isn’t change. It’s the sheer volume of it.
Ontario’s community-based physicians have consistently embraced innovation. However, they are doing so while managing patient care and navigating an increasingly complex practice environment.
Beyond acclimating to EMR enhancements and adopting new digital tools, physicians are adapting to evolving clinical evidence, changing funding models and billing requirements, quality improvement initiatives, administrative obligations, workforce pressures, updated government policies, and shifting patient expectations.
The result is often change fatigue, specifically, the mental and emotional exhaustion that can occur when continuous change leaves little time to adjust before the next change arrives to disrupt the practice.
It’s important to note that physicians are not resistant to innovation. The challenge is capacity. Unlike many professions, learning new systems and workflows often happens outside clinic hours, adding pressure to already demanding schedules.
AI Adds Another Layer of Transformation
AI offers significant opportunities for primary care. AI-powered documentation tools, administrative automation, and clinical decision-support technologies can reduce burden and improve efficiency.
However, adopting AI involves more than activating a new feature. Physicians must evaluate privacy and security considerations, understand risks and benefits, integrate tools into workflows, and maintain appropriate oversight.
Many clinicians are enthusiastic about AI’s potential but need trusted guidance to navigate an increasingly complex marketplace.
Supporting Physicians Through Change
When physicians experience change fatigue, even beneficial innovations can be difficult to adopt. It’s why support and education are critical.
Organizations like OntarioMD (OMD) can play an important role in this respect. Our Advisory Service Team helps physicians assess, adopt, and optimize digital health solutions, providing personalized guidance and hands-on support to reduce the time and effort needed to evaluate technologies and implement meaningful improvements.
Education also plays a key role. Through our webinars, online learning, conferences, and professional development opportunities, physicians can build confidence, stay current on emerging technologies, privacy and security requirements, and make informed decisions about where to invest their time and attention.
Making Change More Sustainable
Digital transformation in health care will continue. The goal is not to stop change but to make it manageable.
That means recognizing physicians’ capacity for continuous adaptation, reducing unnecessary administrative burden where possible, and ensuring implementation support is readily available.
Technology alone will not drive successful transformation. Success depends on supporting the people expected to use it. By combining innovation with practical guidance, education, and hands-on support, we can help physicians move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling empowered as they continue their digital health journey. OMD is committed to making that happen.
